St. John's Diabetes Education Program Merits ADA Recognition
The St. John's Diabetes Education Program has been awarded the prestigious
American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate.
According to Karen Connelly, St. John's Director of Community Outreach,
the ADA certification validates that St. John's Diabetes Education
team members provide high-quality patient education for children and adults
with diabetes. Since diabetes is a chronic and serious medical condition,
patient education is considered to be an essential component of the patient's
Diabetes Education team members include: Program Coordinator Catherine
Cullinane, RN, Certified Diabetes Educator; Susanne Schenk, RN; and Catherine
Holland, Registered Dietitian. Bonnie Maddex and Lisa Smith, both Registered
Dietitians, also provide education for St. John's hospitalized patients
In addition to a track record of excellence in patient care, the St. John's
Diabetes Education program is remarkable in the tremendous private support
it receives to help provide services to community members. Since 1999,
the Steve Winograd Memorial Tennis Tournament has raised more than $270,000
for St. John's Diabetes Education. These funds have been used to provide
staff education, support specialty diabetes clinics, purchase equipment,
provide financial assistance to patients, and send community children
to diabetes summer camps.
Recently, local elite athlete and diabetes patient Chris Kroger received
sponsor support from tennis tournament proceeds to compete in the 2011
Ski Mountaineering World Championships in Claut, Italy. "We are proud
to see Chris and so many of our patients’ lead active lives and
pursue their dreams while living with diabetes," said Diabetes Program
Coordinator Cullinane. "Our program would not be the success it is
today without our dear friend Eddie Kolsky, who founded and organizes
the annual tennis tournament in memory of his friend Steve Winograd,"
Proceeds from the Steve Winograd Memorial Tennis Tournament helped St.
John's first achieve the requirements of ADA certification in 2005.
The current certificate is valid through March 2015. For more information
