St. John's offers two new programs for the coming year: a wellness
program for people with chronic illness and a weight management support
group. Both can help people maintain their New Year's resolutions
for a healthier life.
Healthy U is an evidenced-based program for anyone with a chronic condition,
including diabetes, cancer, heart and lung issues, multiple sclerosis,
Parkinson's disease, arthritis, and more. Developed by Stanford University
and funded locally by the University of Wyoming, the program teaches people
how to manage their daily living in order to lead a happier and healthier life.
Past participants in Healthy U demonstrated a significant improvement in
exercise, cognitive symptoms management, communication with physicians,
self-reported general health, health distress, and fatigue.
The six-week program is facilitated by St. John's certified wellness
coaches Lisa Smith, a registered dietitian; and Natalie Stewart, a board-certified
"The program is taught in a highly participatory manner, which is
what makes it so effective," said Julia Heemstra, director of the
wellness department. "It is grounded in providing mutual support
and celebrating success, which builds the participants' confidence
in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling
lives," she added.
Healthy U meets on Thursdays, from 2:30 to 5:00 pm at St. John's Medical
Center. The fee for the program is $60.00. For every session you attend,
you receive $10.00 back. For those attending all six sessions, the program is free!
