Demonstrating a commitment to patient safety and quality of care as hospital
top priorities, St. John's Medical Center staff members take continuing
education courses and work toward national certifications. Recently a
number of staff members received certifications by passing rigorous exams
in their fields of specialty.
Susanne Schenk, one of St. John's RN diabetes educators, is now credentialed
as a Certified Diabetes Educator® (CDE®) by the National Certification
Board for Diabetes Educators. To be eligible to take the rigorous exam,
which has only a 65% pass rate, candidates must have years of experience
seeing patients. This certification recognizes Susanne's comprehensive
knowledge of and experience in working with patients with all types of diabetes.
Patient Financial Services
The Revenue Cycle department, which encompasses health information management,
patient access, patient assistance, and more, is continuing its drive
toward patient-centered improvements. Now called the Patient Financial
Services department, six of its members were recently certified.
According to Revenue Cycle Director James Hohl, "We are extremely
excited to bring more certifications to St. John's, our patients,
and the community." He added, "This is another step forward
in our efforts to advance training, adopt best practices, and position
ourselves for future challenges navigating the ever-changing healthcare
By passing their exams, Becky Barckhoff is now a Certified Professional
Coder, and Leslie Roberts is now a Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist.
In addition, the following members of the department became Certified Revenue
Cycle Representatives through the Healthcare Financial Management Association:
Bryan Lords and Adam Place, business analysts; and Cristy Liaw and Kelci
Christensen, Patient Financial Services managers.
The Healthcare Financial Management Association oversees the coursework
and exams for certification. Exams cover very specific revenue cycle and
finance topics, such as patient-friendly billing practices, legal/compliance
issues, CMS knowledge base, and computing liabilities.
Betty Zernik, RN, BSN in the Risk Management department, was recently
credentialed as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management
(CPHRM). The CPHRM certification exam is administered by the American
Hospital Association and is recognized as the healthcare industry’s
premier certification for the risk management professional.
