The community is invited to a Ceremony & Celebration to recognize the
affiliation of St. John's Medical Center with the University of Utah's
renowned Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). The event, which will feature
speakers from the health centers and remarks by community members, will
take place on Friday, December 2, at 10:30 am in the hospital lobby.
Immediately following the ceremony, the Wellness and Integrative Health
Center at HCI will lead short hands-on art sessions from 11:30 am - 2:30
pm for anyone interested.
“It's a great honor to be invited to affiliate with a world-class
cancer center such as HCI, " said St. John's communications officer
Karen Connelly. "The credit goes to Dr. John Ward and many others
who helped build our program and forge this important relationship. The
benefits, of course, go to our patients and those we will serve in the
The new agreement lays out the framework for how the two hospitals will
collaborate to ensure residents of the Jackson Hole region have access
to specialists from one of the country's top cancer institutes. The
partnership also allows St. John's to take advantage of the educational
opportunities and operational “best practices” associated
with a larger cancer center, along with improved access to clinical trials
and other research efforts.
Other key features of the agreement include access to Huntsman’s
oncologic library and online resources for cancer support as well as assistance
with St. John’s certification as a Cancer Center of Excellence by
the American College of Surgeons.
Longtime community member Shelley Simonton, who receives care at Huntsman
Cancer Institute and St. John’s Medical Center, expressed heartfelt
enthusiasm about the new partnership. “It’s a dream to know
that my doctors at St. John’s and at Huntsman will be working even
more closely together to coordinate patient care,” she said. “I
look forward to the day when I can travel less for medical care and still
receive the best care possible.”
Program speakers include Dr. Paul Beaupré, CEO of St. John’s
Medical Center; Ben Tanner, chief operating officer of HCI; Kerry Carr,
oncology nurse practitioner at St. John’s Cancer Services; Dr. John
Ward, hematologist/oncologist at HCI and St. John’s Medical Center;
and community member Mercedes Huff.
No appointment is required for the art sessions hosted by Huntsman's
wellness program. The sessions will be held in the Moose-Wapiti classroom
located in the lower level of the hospital. "This is a community
that has come to understand the tremendous power of the arts to heal and
comfort," said Jennifer Simon, St. John's Hospital Foundation
vice president. "We are delighted that our partners at Huntsman agree
and generously offered this program to celebrate our affiliation."
