Author and researcher Richard Davidson, PhD, will speak on "Well-Being
is a Skill: How to have a Healthy Mind," on Wednesday, May 23 at
7 pm at the Center for the Arts in Jackson, as part of the St. John's
Medical Center Words on Wellness speaker series.
The talk will offer scientific evidence that suggests that we can change
our brains by transforming our minds and cultivating mental habits that
improve well-being. These training strategies can be used to improve the
well-being of children, teachers, parents, and communities.
Davidson will begin with an overview of the neuro-scientifically validated
constituents of well-being and will illustrate how each of these is rooted
in specific brain circuits that exhibit plasticity and thus can be modified
through training. These practices can be applied in a wide range of contexts
and have the potential to positively impact social change.
Davidson is best known for his groundbreaking work studying emotion and
the brain. A friend and confidante of the Dalai Lama, he leads conversations
on well-being on international stages such as the World Economic Forum,
where he serves on the Global Council on Mental Health.
Time Magazine named Davidson one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World”
in 2006. A
New York Times bestselling author, Davidson is the founder and director of the
Center for Healthy Minds and Healthy Minds Innovations, Inc. at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Tickets to Davidson's talk are $10 for general admission (including
